(၁၂) Troy ounce unit
The troy ounce (oz t) is a unit of imperial measure. In the present day it is most commonly used to gauge the mass of precious metals. One troy ounce is currently defined as exactly 0.0311034768 kg or 31.1034768 g. One kilogram is equal to 32.1507 troy ounces. One troy ounce is equal to 1.09714286 avoirdupois ounces.

Troy weight is a system of units ofmass customarily used for precious metals and gemstones. There are 12 troy ounces per troy pound, rather than the 16 ounces per pound found in the more common avoirdupois system. The troy ounce is 480 grains, compared with the avoirdupois ounce, which is 437½ grains. Both systems use the same grain defined by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 as exactly 0.06479891 gram.

A troy ounce is 1/12 of a troy pound (a troy pound is actually lighter than an avoirdupois pound). The troy ounce (480 grains) is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce (437.5 grains). A grain is 64.79891 milligrams (mg); therefore one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams (g). This measures out to be about 10 percent more than the avoirdupois ounce, which is 28.349523125 g.

(၁၃) The purity scale used for gold

The carat or karat (symbol: K or kt) is a unit of purity for gold alloys. Carat purity is measured as 24 times the purity by mass:
X = 24 x Mg / Mm
where
X is the carat rating of the material,
Mg is the mass of pure gold or platinum in the material, and
Mm is the total mass of the material.
Therefore, 24-Carat gold is fine (actually 99.9% Au rather than 100%), 18-Carat gold is 18 parts gold 6 parts another metal (forming an alloy with 75% gold), 12-Carat gold is 12 parts gold (12 parts another metal), and so forth. If you had 24 grams of gold and all of it was gold i.e. pure, it would be 24-karat gold. If I had 24 grams of gold and 22 grams of it was gold, the other 2 grams being copper for instance, the bullion would be 22 karats.
In England, the carat was divisible into four grains, and the grain was divisible into four quarts. For example, a gold alloy of fineness (that is, 99.2% purity) could have been described as being 23-carat, 3-grain, 1-quart gold
The carat is also a unit of mass equal to 200 mg (0.2 g ; 0.007055 oz) and is used for measuring gemstones and pearls.
