Sub: Demanding independent investigation for 2 murder victims and 2 migrant suspects
With due respect, I am writing on behalf of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) based in London, UK which is the global campaigning and lobbying organization to restore democracy, human rights and rule of law in Myanmar (Burma). I am writing to request you to investigate independently on the horrific murders of Hannah Witheridge and David Miller as well as 2 Burmese suspects whom we believe used as the scapegoats so that we can see justice realties.
For almost 30 years, Myanmar citizens have entered into Thailand to search for employment. These migrants are facing various serious challenges and too often Myanmar migrants are falsely accused of crimes as serious as murder, theft and robbery without access to independent legal advice and/or insufficient translators to ensure their basic rights as an accused in Thailand’s criminal justice procedures are upheld. The most recent double murders attract worldwide coverage and prompted the concentrated, if seemingly chaotic, police investigation. We, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) is very concerned that two Burmese migrant workers are used as the scapegoats for the murder of two British tourists.
We call for British, Burmese and Thailand governments to cooperate working together for the murder investigation so as to seek justice for the murdered victims. According to the latest updates, it is becoming more obvious that the two suspects are wrongly accused and regarding this, there are so many criticism from the international community which is widely spreading as forest fire. As we believe, Royal Thai police would not let their name tarnished away due to this shambolic investigation of the murder case as a quick-fix as the whole world is closely monitoring on this issue to observe Thailand’s justice and rule of law standards.
Thus, we would like to urge the Royal Thai police to look into the case again and to conduct fresh independent investigation as soon as possible in the hopes that the families of these victims may know justice has been served and that the deaths of two more possible innocents might be avoided.
Thank you very much.
